Amman is the capital city of Jordan. A modern metropolitan, steadily growing in population and modernity, it still holds great historical significance. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs: Population Division, as of 2020, the Jordanian population is about 8,738,402; about 4,007,526, of which live in the capital Amman. Many historic and religious sites can be seen in Amman, Jordan, some famous sites reside in old Amman such as the Citadel, the Roman Temple of Hercules and the 8th-century Umayyad Palace complex, known for its grand dome. During its Greek and Roman eras, the region of Jordan was named Philadelphia.
