The Lincoln Park Zoo is one of my favorite places in Chicago, not only is it free to the public but it is also educational. When the winter season comes along, although the atmosphere changes and the animals are huddled together inside warm and cozy, the outside world is lit with thousands of beautiful lights in wondrous shapes and designs.
I was invited by my good friend, and fellow photographer, Abbi Chase. We both brought our cameras and went out, and still managed to have deep and meaningful conversations for most of the evening.
There were talented live ice sculptors creating intricate art pieces from what was once solid blocks of ice. Slowly, they seemed to reveal the sculpture by slowly removing blocks of ice. It was definitely an admirable job considering that not only was it -5C, but also the gentleman had to endure shards of frozen water hitting his face and eyes at tremendous speed.
The Zoo is covered with lights, the holiday music echoed lightly in the air, hardly noticeable. The voices of happy children accented the lights, the joyous faces almost contagious. In the darkness all these multicolored lights shown through brightly. Individually, a light makes not much impact, but together they can be seen from the sky. The Lincoln Park Zoo keeps its doors opened on Christmas for all those who are inclined to go witness the marvel of this mini winter wonderland.
I met Abbi in Columbia College Chicago, she was studying Photography and she was known as ‘The’ set photographer on campus. Her work was shining above all else, capturing story, detail, emotions, and actions. Her work has definitely influenced mine beyond measure.
Being a filmmaker and photographer can be quite a difficult path; many around do not understand the journey that takes place within during these trying times. This simple night reminded me how healthy it is to be around people; and better yet, be with people. To be with people in a moment. There is a healing power in living in these moments. Yes, while the past may be dark and the future may be murky, the secret lies within that very moment. ‘The moment’ that photographers try and capture. The moment of a father lifting his child in the air, a mother eating delicious food with her children, friends laughing together, lovers embracing one another. The genuine moments of life.
